Slice of Life 2013 Day 16: “Writing Can Be a Pretty Desperate Endeavor”

on March 16, 2013

“Writing can be a pretty desperate endeavor, because it is about some of our deepest needs:  our need to be visible,  to be heard, our need to make sense of our lives, to wake up and grow and belong. It is no wonder if we sometimes tend to take ourselves perhaps a bit too seriously.”  Anne Lamott

Wow. That is powerful.

Writing can be a pretty desperate endeavor.

Because it is about some of our deepest needs.

The need to be visible—to be seen by others.

To be heard—to have someone truly listen.

The need to make sense of our lives—especially when life doesn’t make much sense anymore.

To wake up and grow and belong—to a group, a place, to a community of other writers.

We write sometimes as if our lives depended upon it.

And for some of us,

it just might.

Thank you to Stacy and Ruth at Two Writing Teachers for hosting the Slice of Life Challenge, and giving us an opportunity to write and to share our writing with others.

  1. This is so true. I confess that there was a moment during this month when I was ready to tear down my blog entirely. Yeah, I can go that road some days. I felt too exposed. Thank you for the very powerful quote.

  2. Gail Stevens says:

So glad you didn’t tear down your blog!

I love your writing and so do many others.
